Wiregrass Humane Society

Established in 1991, the Wiregrass Humane Society is an animal rescue facility located in Dothan, Alabama. Our facility houses approximately 130 animals that are available for adoption. The majority of animals at our shelter are animals that have been rescued from the City of Dothan Animal Control Division. Animal Control officers pick up stray animals throughout the City of Dothan. Animals that are not claimed by their owners within 20 days are euthanized. The Wiregrass Humane Society rescues as many animals as possible from Animal Control, providing these innocent animals with a second chance for life.

The Society is organized for the purpose of providing effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals; the care of abused and abandoned animals; the prevention of pet overpopulation in the community; and educating the public on the aforementioned. The Society is not formed for pecuniary or financial gain, and is exempt from Federal taxation under the provisions of the Statute 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code .

BE KIND TO ANIMALS WEEK

The American Humane Association created “Be kind to Animals Week” in 1915 to celebrate the unique bond between humans and animals. The Wiregrass Humane Society promotes this week with several different events. Be Kind to Animals Week kicks off with an Adoptathon at Petsmart on Friday, May 2nd - Sunday May 4th. Dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens will be available for immediate adoption. They will be current on their vaccinations and will already be spayed or neutered. RACE TO THE RESCUE!

Runners on your mark! To continue the celebration of “Be Kind to Animals Week”, the annual Brian Dowling 5K Memorial run will be held at Westgate Park on Saturday, May 17th. The run will begin at 8:00 a.m. Registration information is available online at www.dothanrunners.com. For questions concerning the race you may contact Larry Dykes at 334-792-6021. Each year, the Dothan Runners Club, Inc. sponsors this race in memory of fellow runner and animal lover Brian Dowling. All proceeds from the race will benefit the homeless animals at the Wiregrass Humane Society who are waiting so patiently to get a loving home.
